Excel Spreadsheet Needing to Swap Columns & Rows Instead, I want to have the Company names display vertically in Column A and the Data Attributes display horizontally in Row 1. This would make it easier for me to do comparisons and analysis. Change the Width of Multiple Columns in Excel 2013 The steps below are going to show you how to select multiple columns in Microsoft Excel, then change the width of all of these columns so that they have the same width.
If you have a spreadsheet where the text in your column headings (not the lettered column headings) is longer than the text in the columns, and there are a lot of columns, you may want to rotate the text in your headings so the columns become narrower.
NOTE: We used Excel 2013 to illustrate this feature.
This also allows you to fit more columns of data in a smaller area. To rotate the text in cells, first highlight the cells you that contain the text you want to rotate. Make sure the “Home” tab is active and click the “Orientation” button in the “Alignment” section of the “Home” tab (the button with the slanted text). Select an option to rotate the text. The icons to the left of the options show which way the text will rotate.
The text is rotated in the chosen direction in the selected cells.
For more fine-tune control when rotating your text, highlight the cells containing the text you want to rotate and click the “Alignment Settings” button in the lower-right corner of the “Alignment” section of the “Home” tab.
The “Format Cells” dialog box displays. The “Alignment” tab automatically displays. To rotate the text, click on any point along the semicircle in the “Orientation” box. The number of degrees of the rotation displays in the “Degrees” edit box. If you know the specific number of degrees you want to rotate the text, type the number directly into the “Degrees” edit box, or use the spinner arrow buttons to select a number.
If you want the text to be vertical in a cell (each character takes up one line), click the box to the left of the semicircle angle box in the “Orientation” but (the box with the word “Text” in a vertical format). The button turns black to show that the option is on and your text will look like the first cell in the image below once you click “OK” on the “Format Cells” dialog box.
To reverse the rotation of your text and display it normally, simply go back to the “Alignment” tab on the “Format Cells” dialog box and enter “0” (that’s a zero, not the letter “O”) in the “Degrees” edit box. To reverse vertical text, simply click the vertical text button on the “Alignment” tab so the button is not black.

For those times when Excel 2016 doesn’t automatically adjust the width of your columns to your complete satisfaction, the program makes changing the column widths a breeze. The easiest way to adjust a column is to do a best-fit, using the AutoFit feature. With this method, Excel automatically determines how much to widen or narrow the column to fit the longest entry currently in the column.
Here’s how to use AutoFit to get the best fit for a column:
- Position the mouse on the right border of the worksheet frame with the column letter at the top of the worksheet.Create text line for document mac. For example, organize headings in the prescribed logical order. Use Heading 1, Heading 2, and then Heading 3, rather than Heading 3, Heading 1, and then Heading 2.The pointer changes to a double-headed arrow pointing left and right.
- Double-click the mouse button.Excel widens or narrows the column width to suit the longest entry.
You can apply a best-fit to more than one column at a time. Simply select all the columns that need adjusting (if the columns neighbor one another, drag through their column letters on the frame; if they don’t, hold down the Ctrl key while you click the individual column letters). After you select the columns, double-click any of the right borders on the frame.
Best-fit à la AutoFit doesn’t always produce the expected results. A long title that spills into several columns to the right produces a very wide column when you use best-fit.
When AutoFit’s best-fit won’t do, drag the right border of the column (on the frame) until it’s the size you need instead of double-clicking it. This manual technique for calibrating the column width also works when more than one column is selected. Just be aware that all selected columns assume whatever size you make the one that you’re actually dragging.
